What is structured data and does it help SEO?

Structured data is code (usually JSON-LD following schema.org) that labels what's on a page so search engines understand it precisely: this is an FAQ, this is a product with this price, this is a review with this rating. It doesn't directly boost rankings, but it can earn rich results that stand out in search.

Rich results, like star ratings, FAQ dropdowns, and recipe cards, take up more space and draw more clicks. That extra visibility is the real payoff. Structured data also helps AI answer engines quote your content correctly.

The catch is that it has to match what's visible on the page. Marking up content that a user can't see, or inflating ratings, violates Google's guidelines and can cost you the rich result entirely.
