The useful shift is to think in terms of intent, not just words. Someone searching "running shoes" wants to browse or buy. Someone searching "why do my knees hurt when I run" wants an answer, not a product page. Matching the page to the intent behind the keyword is most of the game.
You don't rank a site for keywords. You rank individual pages. So each important query usually deserves its own focused page rather than one page trying to cover everything at once.
