What are keywords and why do they matter?

Keywords are the words and phrases people type into search. They matter because they tell you what your audience is actually looking for, in their own language. Building pages around real queries is how you get found by people who already want what you do.

The useful shift is to think in terms of intent, not just words. Someone searching "running shoes" wants to browse or buy. Someone searching "why do my knees hurt when I run" wants an answer, not a product page. Matching the page to the intent behind the keyword is most of the game.

You don't rank a site for keywords. You rank individual pages. So each important query usually deserves its own focused page rather than one page trying to cover everything at once.
