What is the difference between short-tail and long-tail keywords?

Short-tail keywords are broad, one or two words, high in volume and very competitive ("shoes", "marketing"). Long-tail keywords are longer and more specific, lower in volume but easier to rank for and closer to a decision ("waterproof trail running shoes for wide feet").

Long-tail terms convert better because the searcher has already narrowed down what they want. A page that answers a precise question tends to attract people who are ready to act, not just browsing.

A healthy strategy targets both. Long-tail pages are how a smaller site starts ranking and building authority, which over time makes the broad, competitive terms reachable. Starting with the hardest keywords first is how most SEO efforts stall.
