An XML sitemap is a file that lists the pages on your site you want search engines to know about, along with when each was last changed. It helps crawlers find your content, especially on large sites or pages that aren't well linked internally. Most sites should have one.
A sitemap doesn't force Google to index or rank anything. It's a hint, not a command. But for a big site, a new site with few external links, or a site with deep pages, it speeds up discovery and reduces the chance that pages get missed.
Submit it in Google Search Console and reference it in your robots file. Modern site frameworks can generate and update it automatically, so it stays accurate without manual work.
