What is the difference between brand and performance marketing?

Performance marketing drives measurable, immediate actions (clicks, sales) and is optimized on hard numbers. Brand marketing builds long-term awareness, trust, and preference, which is harder to measure but shapes whether people choose you at all. Performance captures demand. Brand creates it. Sustained growth needs both.

Performance marketing is attractive because it's trackable: you can tie spend to sales directly. The risk of relying only on it is that you're always harvesting existing demand and competing on price, without building the recognition that makes people seek you out.

Brand marketing is the slower investment that makes performance marketing cheaper over time, because a known, trusted brand converts better and costs less to advertise. The common mistake is cutting brand entirely because it's hard to measure, which starves future demand.
