What is a marketing funnel?

A marketing funnel is the path people take from first hearing about you to becoming a customer, usually described in stages: awareness, interest, consideration, and decision. It's called a funnel because many people enter at the top and fewer reach the bottom, so each stage needs the right content to move people down.

The value of the model is diagnosis. If lots of people visit but few buy, you have a bottom-of-funnel problem (trust, pricing, or a clunky checkout). If few people arrive at all, it's a top-of-funnel awareness problem. Knowing which stage leaks tells you where to focus.

Different content suits different stages: educational material builds awareness, comparisons and case studies aid consideration, and clear offers drive decisions. Matching your marketing to where people are in the funnel is more effective than pushing the same message at everyone.
