What is a lead magnet?

A lead magnet is something valuable you give away for free in exchange for contact details, usually an email address. A guide, checklist, template, or useful tool, offered in return for signing up. It turns anonymous visitors into contacts you can build a relationship with over time.

It works because people won't hand over their email for nothing, but they will for something genuinely useful and relevant to what they're already interested in. The better and more specific the offer, the higher quality the leads it attracts.

The key is relevance: the lead magnet should appeal to the exact people you want as customers, so the contacts you collect are worth having. A generic freebie collects generic signups. A targeted one collects future customers.
