What is the difference between SEO and SEM?

SEO (search engine optimization) earns unpaid rankings in search results over time. SEM (search engine marketing) usually refers to paid search ads that appear instantly when you pay for them. SEO is a long-term investment that compounds. SEM buys immediate visibility. They complement each other.

SEO takes months to build but keeps delivering traffic at no cost per click once you rank. SEM delivers traffic today, targeted and controllable, but stops the moment you pause spending. One builds an asset, the other rents attention.

A common approach is to use paid search to capture demand and test keywords now, while investing in SEO to earn that traffic for free later. Relying only on ads is expensive forever. Relying only on SEO is slow to start. Together they cover both timeframes.
