llms.txt is a proposed file that gives AI tools a curated, plain-text index of your most important pages, similar in spirit to a sitemap but aimed at language models. Some sites have adopted it, but as of 2026 it's optional and adoption is mixed, and Google has said it isn't needed for its own generative features.
The idea is to help AI systems understand which pages represent your site's authority so they prioritize them. Whether major AI engines actually use it varies, and no major search provider has made it a requirement.
It's low-cost to add if you want to experiment, but it's not a foundation. The reliable wins are the same as always: clear, useful, well-structured, crawlable content. Treat llms.txt as a small optional extra, not a strategy.

If classic SEO is about ranking a link, GEO is about being part of the synthesized answer itself.
SEO gets your pages to rank in traditional search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) gets a direct answer from your page surfaced as a snippet or voice result. GEO (generative engine optimization) gets your content cited inside AI-generated answers. They're layers of the same goal, not rivals.
Answer questions directly and early, use clear question-style headings, include concrete facts and sourced numbers, and keep the page accurate and well-structured. AI tools quote passages that plainly answer a question with specifics, so make those passages easy to find and lift.
