What is the difference between SEO, AEO, and GEO?

SEO gets your pages to rank in traditional search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) gets a direct answer from your page surfaced as a snippet or voice result. GEO (generative engine optimization) gets your content cited inside AI-generated answers. They're layers of the same goal, not rivals.

The practical point is that they share a foundation. Crawlable, well-structured, genuinely helpful content that answers questions clearly performs across all three. You don't need three separate strategies so much as good content optimized for how each surface reads it.

As of 2026, AI answers and traditional results are increasingly rooted in the same ranking systems, so treating AEO and GEO as part of SEO rather than separate disciplines is the sensible stance. Nail the fundamentals, then add the quotability and structure that AI surfaces reward.
