What is zero-click search?

A zero-click search is one where the user gets their answer directly on the results page, from a featured snippet, a knowledge panel, or an AI answer, without clicking any website. A growing share of searches now end this way, which changes what "showing up in search" is worth.

For publishers it's a double-edged shift. You can gain visibility and brand exposure by being the quoted source, but lose the click and the traffic you'd have gotten before. The value moves from the visit to the mention.

The response is to optimize for both: be the source that gets quoted (for reach and authority), and give people reasons to click through anyway, like deeper detail, tools, or offers the snippet can't contain. Measuring success increasingly means tracking mentions, not just clicks.
