Does site speed affect SEO?

Yes. Google uses page experience signals called Core Web Vitals as a ranking factor, and speed is central to them. As of July 2026 the "good" thresholds are LCP under 2.5 seconds (loading), INP under 200 milliseconds (responsiveness), and CLS under 0.1 (visual stability), measured on real visitors.

Speed rarely wins a ranking on its own, but it breaks ties and it protects the rankings you have. When two pages are otherwise close, the faster, smoother one tends to win. A slow page also loses visitors before they read anything, which hurts every downstream metric.

The business case is stronger than the ranking case. Faster sites convert better and bounce less. Improving speed usually pays for itself in revenue before it pays off in position.
