Do coding agents replace developers?

No. As of 2026, coding agents make developers faster and let smaller teams do more, but they don't replace the judgment developers provide: deciding what to build, designing how systems fit together, catching subtle bugs, and owning that the result is correct and secure. The job shifts toward direction and review.

Agents are strong at producing code and weak at knowing whether it's the right code. Someone still has to define the problem, choose the approach, and be accountable when it matters. That's the developer's role, and it's growing, not shrinking.

The realistic change is leverage. A developer who directs agents well ships far more than one typing every line by hand. Teams that treat AI as a force multiplier out-build teams that either ignore it or trust it blindly.
