The distinction matters. A page can score well in a lab test on a fast machine and still fail for real users on phones and slower networks. Field data reflects those real conditions, so treat it as the truth and lab tools as the diagnosis.
Measure regularly and after major changes, and watch the trend, not a single reading. Set the good thresholds (LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1) as your targets, and track the share of real visits meeting them.
