What is a prompt and what is prompt engineering?

A prompt is the instruction you give an AI model. Prompt engineering is the practice of writing that instruction well: being specific about the task, giving context and examples, stating the format you want, and setting constraints. Better prompts produce dramatically better output from the same model.

The biggest wins come from specificity. "Write a product description" gives you generic filler. "Write a 40-word product description for a waterproof hiking boot, aimed at first-time trekkers, plain and warm in tone" gives you something usable. The model can only meet the bar you set.

Examples help more than adjectives. Showing the model one or two samples of what good looks like usually beats describing it. This is why serious AI features ship with carefully written system prompts behind the scenes.
